Monthly ad maintenance: what to check

A short monthly plan for a YouTube channel: slots in new videos, new feedback, yellow icons, revenue over equal periods and the archive people still watch.

In short

Once a month, check five things: do all new videos of 8+ minutes have slots, is there new YouTube feedback, are there new yellow icons, how did revenue change over equal periods, and what about archive videos people watch now. It takes half an hour, not a full audit, and keeps your layout from drifting.

Why a regular check#

A big archive audit is done rarely because it takes time. But within a month a channel publishes new videos, YouTube updates slot assessments and the audience shifts. Small problems pile up unnoticed: one video went out without mid-rolls, another slot got flagged.

A short monthly check catches these before they turn into six months of missed revenue.

Illustration: one day a month and the four main check items.

1. New videos have slots#

Go through the videos published this month. Every video of 8 minutes or longer should have mid-rolls on and slots in place. This is the most common loss: a video went out in a rush and ads were never set up. To avoid it, use the pre-publish checklist.

2. New feedback#

Open the slot editor for the videos watched most right now and check for “Ads unlikely to show here”. Feedback can appear on older slots too. What to do about it: the feedback guide.

3. Yellow icons#

On the Content page, look at the monetization column. A yellow icon means limited ads on the whole video. That is about content, not slots; request a review through Studio if needed. The difference is explained in slot feedback vs the yellow icon.

4. Revenue over equal periods#

Compare the last 28 days with the previous 28 days, not a month with a week. Look not only at revenue but also at RPM and the share of monetized playbacks. If something moved a lot, dig into the causes: why RPM changes and what monetized playbacks are.

5. The archive people watch now#

Sort videos by views over the last 28 days. If the leaders include old videos without slots or with feedback, add them to next month’s list or fix them right away: adding ads to a published video.

Write down what you changed#

A short note after each check (date, video, before, after) saves time next month. It also helps you evaluate the result honestly, without confusing the effect of your edits with seasonality.

The monthly check in the Monvilo dashboard#

Monvilo collects data from Studio into one list on the Videos tab. The “No slots”, “Limited ads” and “interferes” flag filters cover items 1, 2 and 3 in a couple of minutes.

Videos without slots can go into a queue: Monvilo opens each one in Studio, places slots in speech pauses, saves and waits for YouTube’s evaluation. For item 4 there is the “Why revenue changed” block, which splits a change into viewers, the share of views with ads, ads per view and ad prices.

Frequently asked questions#

Which day of the month should I pick?

Any, as long as it is consistent. Early in the month is handy, when Studio already shows last month’s data.

What if I publish few videos?

Then the check takes even less time. The main point is not to miss new feedback and old videos that suddenly became popular again.

Do I need to re-place all slots every month?

No. Only where there is a problem: no slots, feedback, or a decision to change frequency.
