In short
Before publishing, check five things: mid-roll ads are on, no slot cuts a sentence, slots have no YouTube feedback, your manual slots are still there and changes are saved. It takes a few minutes, and the first hours after publishing are exactly when a video gets many of its views.
Why check before publishing#
Many creators place ads after a video goes live, or never check them at all. But the first views are often the most numerous: subscribers get a notification and the video enters recommendations. If at that moment slots sit mid-sentence or mid-rolls are off, fixing it later will not bring those views back.
The checklist below is for a video of 8 minutes or longer, uploaded as unlisted, private or scheduled.
Before publishing
Mid-roll ads turned on
No slot cuts a sentence
No slot feedback
Manual slots still there
Changes saved
1. Mid-roll ads are on#
Open the video in Studio → Monetization. Ads should be on, and mid-roll should be ticked among the ad types. If the video is under 8 minutes, the option will not be there: why mid-rolls start at 8 minutes.
If you cannot see the slot editor button at all, go through the reasons in “No ad breaks button in YouTube Studio”.
2. No slot cuts a sentence#
Open the ad breaks editor and listen to 5–10 seconds around each point. A good slot comes after a finished thought: a conclusion, an answer, a completed step. A poor one sits mid-sentence, right after a question or at a climax.
Quick test: imagine an ad starting right there. If you want to hear the end of the sentence, so will your viewers.
3. Slots have no feedback#
After you save, YouTube evaluates the slots and may mark some as “Ads unlikely to show here”. Check the editor again a few minutes after saving. If there is feedback, move the point to the nearest finished pause. Full guide: “Ads unlikely to show here”.
4. Manual slots are still there#
If you placed some slots by hand and then ran automatic placement or a tool, make sure the points you need survived. This matters most for slots chosen by meaning: before a sponsor segment, after a chapter. How Monvilo treats such points is covered in keeping manual slots.
If automatic slots are enabled in Studio, look at where they are and remove the extras.
5. Changes are saved#
It sounds obvious, but the slot editor is a separate window, and its changes are saved separately from the video details. Click Continue, then Save on the details page, and reopen the editor: the points should be where you left them.
Getting through the checklist faster with Monvilo#
Monvilo covers items 2–4 in a single run. The extension analyzes the video’s audio in your browser, places slots in speech pauses for the selected frequency, saves them in Studio and waits for YouTube’s evaluation. Flagged slots are removed and replaced.
If the video already has manual slots, Monvilo asks what to do with them: for example, keep the ones without feedback that fit the chosen frequency. Still check items 1 and 5 yourself: it takes a minute and leaves no doubt.
Frequently asked questions#
Can I place ads in a scheduled video?
Yes. Ad slots can be set up before publishing if the video has finished processing and monetization is available for it.
How long does YouTube take to show feedback after saving?
Usually the evaluation appears within a few minutes, but YouTube does not state an exact time. If there is no feedback right away, check again later.
What matters more: the number of slots or their position?
Position. One slot in a good pause is worth more than three slots mid-sentence that YouTube flags or viewers skip by closing the video.
