How to add and review mid-rolls on a published video

Can you add mid-roll ads to an older YouTube video, what changes for viewers and how to calmly review the layout of a video that is still getting views.

In this article7

In short

You can add or change ad slots on any video of 8 minutes or longer, even one published long ago. Changes apply to future views, not past ones. Before editing, note the current slots, place new ones at finished pauses, save and wait for YouTube’s evaluation.

Can you add ads after publishing?#

Yes. A video’s monetization settings are not frozen at publication. You can open the slot editor and change the layout at any time, as long as the usual conditions are met: the channel is in the Partner Program, the video is 8 minutes or longer and mid-roll ads are on.

This is especially useful for videos that keep getting views: answers to common questions, reviews, tutorials, old hits.

Illustration: the video is already live with no slots of its own; after a review, slots sit in speech pauses.

What changes for viewers#

The new layout applies to views after you save. People who already watched notice nothing, and new viewers see ads in the new slots, if YouTube decides to show them. A slot is an opportunity, not a guarantee: here is why.

Keep an eye on comments: if the video had no mid-rolls before, viewers may notice. That makes it all the more important for new slots to sit in pauses, not mid-sentence.

Reviewing the layout step by step#

  1. Open the video in Studio → Monetization and check that mid-roll is on. If there is no editor button, go through the possible reasons.
  2. Note the current slots. Especially manual ones: you will need their timestamps if you want to go back.
  3. Look at automatic slots if they are enabled. The difference is covered in manual vs automatic slots.
  4. Place slots at finished pauses. Frequency is your call: how to choose it.
  5. Save in the editor and on the details page, then reopen the editor and check the points.
  6. Check for feedback after a few minutes. If you see “Ads unlikely to show here”, move the slot: what to do about the feedback.

One video or the whole archive#

This article is about one specific video. If there are dozens or hundreds of them, it is easier to work from a list and start with those people watch now. The order and criteria are in how to audit your whole archive.

How Monvilo does it#

Open the slot editor for a published video and the Monvilo panel appears next to it. Choose a frequency and run the analysis: the extension finds speech pauses right in your browser, places slots, saves them and waits for YouTube’s evaluation.

If the video already has manual slots, Monvilo asks what to do with them: for example, keep the ones without feedback. More in keeping manual slots. The original slots of every video can be restored with one command.

Frequently asked questions#

Will new ads affect recommendations for an old video?

YouTube does not describe a direct link between ad slots and recommendations. But if an ad is poorly placed and viewers leave, retention shows it. So slot position matters more than slot count.

Can I remove mid-rolls if I don’t like the result?

Yes. Untick mid-roll or delete the slots in the editor and save. The change applies to subsequent views.

How do I know whether the change helped?

Compare equal periods before and after and account for seasonality. Details in how to evaluate a placement change.
