In short
In a video of an hour or more, start with structure: split it into chapters and put slots at their boundaries. Inside long chapters, add slots at finished speech pauses. Choose the number of slots by how it feels to the viewer, not by the maximum: long videos are watched in parts, and frequent ads make people close them sooner.
How a long video is different#
A 10-minute video needs one or two slots, and a mistake at one point changes little. An hour-long video may have ten or more, and every decision repeats. In a short video one poor slot is minor; in a long one, a habit of placing points “on a grid” becomes a dozen cut-off sentences.
Long videos are also watched differently: some people play them in the background, some come back several times, some jump to the chapter they need. The layout should work for all of them.
Hour-long video
Step 1. Start with chapters#
Chapters are a ready-made frame for ads. At a chapter boundary the author closes one topic and opens the next, and viewers take the break naturally. If you have already added chapter timestamps to the description, use them as the first set of candidates.
Do not put the slot exactly on the chapter timestamp: the first sentence of the new topic often starts there. Move the point to the pause just before, where the previous thought ended.
Step 2. Add slots inside long chapters#
If a chapter runs 15–20 minutes, one slot at its boundary is not enough, and the next one is a long wait. Inside such a chapter, look for smaller transitions:
- the end of an example or story;
- a finished answer to a question;
- a change of subtopic: “now let’s talk about…”.
The approach is the same as in a short video: the slot goes after a finished thought, not in the middle. Why an even grid works poorly here is covered in “Every N minutes or in natural pauses”.
Step 3. Decide how many slots are enough#
YouTube does not set a required number of slots. Frequency is your editorial call, and for an hour-long video it helps to think like this:
- How long a viewer watches in one sitting. If a typical session is 15–20 minutes, it matters more that they do not get three ads in a row at the start.
- The pace of the video. Calm conversation has pauses more often; fast editing has fewer.
- Sponsor segments. A YouTube ad right before or after a sponsor read feels like two breaks in a row.
More on choosing density in how to choose mid-roll frequency.
Long-video formats#
Hour-long videos vary a lot, and each format has its own natural points:
- Podcasts and interviews: after a finished answer, not at every change of voice: ad breaks in interviews and podcasts.
- Documentaries: between episodes and away from climaxes: ad breaks in documentaries.
- Tutorials and walkthroughs: after a completed step: ad breaks in tutorials.
How Monvilo handles hour-long videos#
A long video is exactly where placing slots by hand gets tedious. Monvilo analyzes the audio of the whole video in your browser, finds speech pauses, including over music, and picks slots for the chosen frequency. On the Interval tab you can set the step, start and end, and each point snaps to the nearest narration pause.
Before placement, the panel shows the pause supply: how many clean speech pauses there are per 10 minutes and whether that is enough for the chosen frequency. If not, a lower frequency is better than slots mid-sentence.
Frequently asked questions#
How many ads should an hour-long video have?
There is no single number. Start with a moderate frequency at chapter boundaries and add slots inside long chapters only where there are good pauses.
Do I need a slot in the first few minutes?
Not necessarily. The first minutes decide whether a viewer stays. Many creators place the first slot after the intro, once the viewer knows what the video is about.
Do chapters affect ad delivery?
Chapters are navigation for viewers, not an ad setting. But their boundaries usually match good ad positions, which makes them a convenient guide.
